Prof Steve Davies

Founding Director

Prof Davies is a Consultant Endocrinologist at the University Hospital Wales. He has an established reputation in medical education particularly online learning, having been the founder of OnExamination.com and having set up other diploma courses. He has also been involved in establishing training courses for weight management in community pharmacy. His clinical interests include hypogonadism, growth hormone deficiency and obesity. He has published over 100 peer reviewed publications and his research interests include the application of novel technologies in delivering medical education.

Dr Atul Kalhan

Course Director

Dr Kalhan is currently working as a Consultant Physician/Diabetes & Endocrinology at Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. He graduated from Delhi University with MBBS and subsequently completed his MD with a thesis on Thyroid dysfunction. He completed his specialist registrar training in Diabetes & Endocrinology as part of all Wales Specialty training program. He completed 2 years of lab based research on neuroendocrine tumours for which was awarded a MD from Cardiff University. Dr Kalhan has published editorials in current opinions of lipidology and has contributed to a book chapter on Neuroendocrine tumours in an oncology textbook. He is also currently working on a MCQ revision textbook for SCE exam in Endocrinology. Dr Kalhan’s hobbies include long distance running (at a slow pace), having completed a successful half marathon last year and he has an interest in gazing at celestial bodies.

Dr Vinay Eligar

Vinay has been a Consultant at University hospital of Wales since completing his Welsh deanery training. He has authored a book chapter on Thyroid replacement and for higher specialty exams in diabetes and endocrinology. He has developed materials for Diabetes MSc course conducted by University of South Wales and Cardiff University and maintains significant interest in inpatient diabetes management.

His current research interests include “Strategies for Inpatient hypoglycaemia prevention”. As a part of Thyroid research team affiliated to Cardiff University, he is involved in “Genetics of hypothyroidism (GENTHYR) study, looking into role of T3 and T4 combination therapies in specific subsets of hypothyroidism.

Dr Pete Taylor

Dr Pete Taylor is a specialist in Diabetes and Endocrinology, he has conducted a wide range of epidemiological research in conjunction with his diabetes and endocrinology training. Dr Taylor has engaged in National Diabetes inpatient audits, and undertaken audits to ascertain the quality of insulin prescribing, and then used this data to help improve the current insulin prescribing chart at the Royal United Hospital in Bath. He is currently jointly undertaking a score to predict hypoglycemia in hospital (HYPOHALT) and a summary sheet to enhance communication between clinical staff caring for inpatients. Dr Taylor’s hobbies are wide ranging, he enjoys being on the Manchester City terraces as much as he enjoys reading P.G. Wodehouse novels.

Dr Anil Kumar

Dr. Anil Kumar PN is a medical specialist in diabetology and endocrinology at the University Hospital of Wales. He is a professor at the Royal College and Honorary Lecturer at Cardiff University. He graduated from a DNB (general medicine) and a M.D. (general medicine) with a thesis entitled "Lean Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus". He began his training at the Dean's of Medicine in Mersey, Liverpool. He then began his specialized training in diabetes and endocrinology at the Aberdeen Royal Infirmary and completed it at the Medicine Dean's of Wales. He currently directs the Diabetes Care Services at the University Hospital of Wales. He is passionate about cricket.

Dr Maitrayee Choudhury

Author

Maitrayee graduated from Newcastle University in 2004 and undertook her registrar training in Wales. Her specialty interest is in cystic fibrosis related diabetes, in which she has undertaken an MD. She currently works as a Consultant in Diabetes and Endocrinology at UHW. Her interests include hiking and playing the violin.
